Paints

As well as the quality of the paint, the quality of the surface on which the paint is to be applied is also important. So try to make the walls a good surface for paints. Recent developments have improved the looks and quality of paints. Now paints are tougher, washable, quick drying, smoother, and easier to apply.

Manufacturers name of colour differs widely. So when you are buying colours take a sample of the colour you want with you. With British standards, each colour is given a number for the convenience of identification.

The time taken for a paint to dry depends on the paint, the type of the surface applied and the atmospheric condition. Grease and dirt delay the drying of paints.

Some paints contain lead, which could be toxic. So when you are buying paint check in the label whether it contains lead or not, especially in nurseries etc.

Oil based paints

Contains synthetic or natural resins, pigments, oils and white spirit solvent. These take longer to dry. Oil based gloss finish paints are the toughest of all and could be used on doors and windows, skirting, on metal etc. Eggshell or satin is a tough, non-gloss and washable paint. It is suitable on wood and metal. Non-drips are a jelly-like kind of paint. They are applied thickly on walls. This gives a hard and durable finish.

Emulsion paints

Emulsion paints are synthetic resins and colour pigments suspended in water. The water evaporates leaving a resinous film over the surface. Emulsions called eggshell could be applied on ceilings and walls. Matt emulsions are non-washable; and are difficult to clean. Non drip emulsions do not come in gloss. Some emulsions prevent condensation while some are anti-fungus or mould.

Distemper is a cheap alternative. But cannot be cleaned or washed.

Aluminium paints

This is used as a finish on metal and is particularly recommended for heated surfaces. It can also be used on wood as a finish.
