Primers

These could be oil based or emulsion. Used to seal surfaces and bind loose, chalky or powdery ones. They could be divided as follows.

i. Plaster - for use on new plaster, brickwork and concrete, seals porous surfaces.
ii. Wood - Hardwoods and softwoods could be painted with this.
iii. Metal - Could be used on iron, steel or aluminium


Application
Application is with a brush. Wood and metal should be painted as soon as possible once the primer dries. Synthetic Varnish is made of polyurethane or polyester and is better than traditional varnish and is used to seal wood panels, plywood etc.. Atmospheric condition affects the drying of all varnish. If the pattern is colorfast ordinary wallpaper also could be waterproofed with varnish.

Wood stains
You can apply a coloured wood stain to colour the wood retaining the grains. You can eliminate the need for varnish by using a polyurethane stain with a tough waterproof finish.
