Grouping of Plants

In traditional Japanese garden design trees are used as sculptures. The same principle used in modern gardens where the rigid demarcation of hedges and shaped beds has been replaced by groups of plants which of the same trees give the main space division of garden and provide in themselves compositions of form, colour and texture. In different scales this type of grouping applies to all sizes of Plant, Trees, Shrubs, Herbaceous, and Ground Plants.

Texture is important in choosing plants for backgrounds. It is their close Matt texture which makes box and yew hedging ideal as a foil to flower on a statuary, whereas the broken light reflected by shinny leaves make it a poor background.

In addition to its general outline a plant has a pattern, which is formed by its shape, the arrangement of it's leaves buds and flowers. Those plants with strongly marked pattern are valuable in giving strength to a composition or as adjuncts to architecture.

One of the more sub the qualities of plants is a certain relation ship in colour and proportion between the stem, the leaves and the flowers, and the poise of the flowers upon their stems. It is these qualities which give the plant species a grace often lacking in the garden hybrids.
