Garden
Boundaries
Garden boundaries are an essential part of the garden. They make
a statement about the size and the shape of the garden. To succeed
you should position the boundary correctly into the correct proportion,
with suitable colour and texture.
When dealing with the boundary walls or fences you must identify
its effect for example a flat surfaced boundary exaggerates length
and minimizes the width of the enclosure visually. And also dark
surfaces tending to close in while light ones to recede.
A garden can be allowed to merge visually with another garden
or with a town pork or square with a light and simple fence. The
worst type of fence is the concrete post with wire mesh. Ugly
in itself it does not even serve the purpose of giving seclusion
or provide a good support for climbing plants. In such places
iron railings could be used. Water in the form of moats was one
of the earliest boundaries of all and its still unsurpassed in
giving a complete physical boundary with an undisturbed view.
It is seldom a practical possibility in a private garden unless
the water is already there in a form, which can be used for the
purpose.
Framed panels of wood can give a simple rectangular pattern, dividing
the fence into any designed scale and proportion. Neat wooden
picket fences are and old cottage gardens tradition and has reappeared.
