How long will it take to build?

There are many variables that will affect the amount of time it takes to build your home. You won't really be able to plan exactly how long it will take until you've selected an architect, agreed on a specific plan, a lot, and a builder.

The size and complexity of a home, site and weather conditions, and the availability of labor and materials all affect the time under construction - or cycle time, as builders call it.

Regulatory procedures vary so much throughout the country, that the time it takes to obtain a building permit can range from a couple of weeks to many months - before your builder can begin construction. And then there's the fact that every builder has its own pace at which it proceeds through construction.

Your builder will set his or her own schedule, and those dates will become the ones to track.
