Planning a
bedroom
First establish all the bedrooms in relation to the others. Then
go into each bedroom individually. Think about the electricity
supply, water supply etc. to your bedroom. Always try to enhance
what is there rather than arbitrarily adding items.
First draw a scaled plan of your bedroom. Jot down a list of your
requirements in terms of activities, necessary furniture and space
allotment. Try to workout the best possible positions for all
the necessary furniture you have selected. Also think about the
circulation and clearance spaces you will need. For example a
minimum of 2'6" or 750mm space is needed around the bed for circulation.
A small bedroom, which can look quite spacious in plan, is bound
to become a muddle if the bed can't be made properly or if open
doors and drawers clash.
Top priority position should be given to the placement of the
bed. In order to avoid draughts try to avoid the bed going under
the window or in a direct line between the window and the door.
After locating your bed think about grouping the rest of the furniture
logically. It must be relevant to your own peculiar daily round
of activities. For example washbasin, chair, light switches relate
to going to bed at nights. As a general room try to avoid an equal
distribution of clutter around the room. If you are using furniture
with lighter legs or bases or if they are wall mounted, your room
will look larger than having the same items solid to the floor.
