Construction
Methods
A change of level in your existing living
room could be made with a wooden boarding. The wood must be about
1" or 25 mm Thick, ¾" / 18 mm plywood or chipboard sheets or panels.
Old and new levels may be united by choosing one material to cover
the living in a continuous surface. A carpet is ideal for use
in this way but most other floorings are normally suitable if
careful attention is paid to exposed edges and corners.
Safety
When creating level changes in your living room be aware about
the safety of your family members. It is important to consider
whether a proposed change would produce a dangerous spot in an
important route within your home. In such a situation try to make
the level change clearly visible by using different floor coverings
lighting etc. Handrails or parapets also could be used to overcome
this problem.
Walls, Ceilings, Windows, Lighting
In modern interiors walls generally are seen as sheer slabs of
colour or texture, keeping in mind that plain coloured rooms are
much easier to line in contrasting schemes.
Your living room will look spacious during the daytime if you
paint the ceiling with a lighter colour. But if you paint it dark
it will come to life in the night when the ceiling recessed lights
are switched on.
All windows act as focal points, but if you need some privacy
think about curtains. Think also about the lighting scheme as
soon as the furniture layout is settled. Bright lights are for
working and reading while suitably muted lights are for conversation
and relaxation. Flattering lights are for parties.
