The work triangle

Basic kitchen use could be split into three elementary stages.

i. Storage - The fridge and food cupboards
ii. Preparation - The sink and the main worktop area
iii. Cooking - The oven and the hob

The work triangle is the path between these three points and represents the way that we use our kitchen. The total length of the three sides should not be too long. Once established, these three areas need to be equipped properly.

Storage

- Centered around the fridge. Make sure you have plenty of cupboard space.

Preparation - Plenty of worktop space around the sink.
Cooking

- Plenty of space around the cooker for pans and more especially for pan handles.

Safety is the key when young children are around as the kitchen kills as many people as roads. The hob is the most dangerous thing in the kitchen. The gas burners should be at arrow at the back of the worktop so that children could not reach. It is a good idea to keep the controls also out of reach of children.

Kitchen finishes should be very tough to withstand the hard wear. There should be at least one surface for cutting so that you are not tempted to use the laminated top and leave permanent marks, which spoil the surface.
