Selecting
Table and Chairs
These should suite your home and members of your family. Following
sketch shows the space taken by a human seated in a standard dining
table.

Notice the sizes of the table and chair. Even if you are buying
higher or lower tables always try to maintain the 305 - 360 mm
legroom, or you may not be sitting comfortably.
Armless dining chairs are inexpensive compared with ones with
arms. However, dining chairs are more comfortable when they have
arms. The position of your arm is very important. You should be
able to rest your arm and forearm on the arm of the chair and
move your elbows about it as you eat.
What would you do with the dining chairs when they are not in
use? You could push them under the table, you could stack them
in a corner or you could fold them up. If you are going to push
them under the table, check whether it is possible to do so before
buying. Stacking chairs no longer look like refugees from the
church hall and could be space savers in small houses. If you
are selecting folding doors you have to be careful. Most folding
chairs look untidy when they are folded. Always select something
that looks tidy as the Italian acrylic pile chair.
If you plan to double your dining chairs, as extra seating be
careful in selecting them. They should be high enough for the
user to reach the tabletop when he is seated and also it should
to easy to move. Always make sure that the chair is not tilted.
If it is tilted you will be forced to sit back, Always remember
most people find it comfortable to sit on a firm cane chair rather
than a low softly upholstered chair.
You can plan to make your living room a dining room. You can even
use your sofa as dining chairs. But be careful, with lower sofas
people need more leg room. So select wide tables or you can arrange
people not to sit opposite to each other. If you are using a large
conventional sofa choose a table with a center support.
If you have a smaller room for dining you can select a fixed wooden
or chipboard bench. As shown in the following sketch.

Freestanding benches seat more people then chars do. They are
better when used with a table with a central support, and corner
placed table legs are impractical with this type of an arrangement.
