Selecting a Dinning Table
The size of your dining table will be determined by the space
you have allotted for dining and the number of people that you
are going to serve. For a single person you will need 610mm X
380 mm (2ft x 1ft 3 in) room; on the table. If you are sitting
on the both sides of the table the table should be at least 760
mm (2ft 6 in) wide.
For a round table multiply the number of people by the size of
the place setting and divide by 22/7, or 3.14 which gives you
the diameter of the table. For example a table for six people
sitting you will need.
[6 X 2]/ [22/7]= [6 X 2 X 7]/22 = 42/11 = 3 ft sin approx.
For a square table go back to your place setting and arrange it
for using minimum amount of space so that nothing overlaps. You
will need 1.3 m square (4ft 6 in) approximately for six people.
With these calculations you will realize that you need less floor
space to seat people comfortably around a round table than around
a square table. Always remember, in addition to the width or the
diameter of your table, you must add at least 406 mm (1ft 4 in)
for each chair. Also a 460 mm (1 ft 6 in) for you to push the
chair back, and also to give a passage around the back of chairs
for serving. If there are two people serving you may need 965
mm (3ft 2 in. ) passage. If you are going to buy a table, which
could be expanded with extra wings or leaves, choose a table that
provides storage for extra leaves inside the tabletop.
