Serving
How much space can you allow for serving? The answer depends on
how much can you spare. A work surface to work and serve food
from is preferred by many sideboards usually provide this high
surface but an alternative is to fit a shelf 355-460 mm (14-18in)
deep. It should be painted to match the walls and should be coated
in melamine or plastic laminae and run wall to wall. If your selection
is not heat proofed it must be protected by a cork mat.
Storage
China, glass and cutlery should be kept covered. You can build
floor to wall cupboards with hinged or sliding doors for storage.
Storage could be placed either in the kitchen or in the dining
room.

The average person can reach comfortably up to 6ft 2in / 1.9 in
and down to 34 in / 865 mm from the ground.
Always try to use the center of the cupboard for frequently used
items. Use a partitioned basket that could be taken to the table
in one piece to store cutlery.
You may like to have a central table in the kitchen. In such a
case always remember that you need 1.2m (4ft) space around the
table for serving. Ideally, the table should be out of the cooking
area. It is advisable to cover the jam of cooking by having a
screen. If your dining area is too small, try to use a narrower
table, which could be a practical answer.
If you are thinking about wall seating, it has to be tailor made
to fit exactly to the space available. The height of the sea t
will depend on the height of the table. The ideal place for a
small table is a corner or a bay window.
