When the ward wise breakdown of land use distribution is arranged according to the 14 planning units within the city, it gives a fairly clear picture of the land use according to its functional use.  The Fort area, for example, provides the largest amount of non-residential floor space in the city.   This can be seen from the much larger allocation of floor space on non-residential use in Kollupitiya (1.32 Mn. square meters) Bambalapitiya (1.17 Mn. square meters) Cinnamon Gardens (1.05 Mn. square meters) and Kochchikade (0.90 Mn. square meters).

The next highest level of floor space for non residential activities is provided by the planning units adjoining these wards such as Maradana (0.92 Mn. square meters)  Kirilapone (1.01 Mn. square meters) and Mattakkuliya (0.85 Mn. square meters).  Borella has 0.45 Mn. square meters of floor space and Narahenpita 0.74 Mn. square meters of floor space under non- resident land use. The aggregate level of intensity of development in these Planning units is given in Figure 7.
